Wed 27 March: PERVERT’S GUIDE TO CINEMA

Sophie Fiennes, UK 2006  |  150 minutes  |  Certificate 18

‘Cinema is the ultimate pervert art. It doesn’t give you what you desire – it tells you how to desire’

The celebrated philosopher Slavoj Zizek takes an exhilarating ride through some of the greatest movies ever made. He delves into the hidden language of cinema, uncovering what movies can tell us about ourselves – that is, about human fantasy, sexuality, subjectivity, desire, materiality and cinematic form.

In a three-part film of 150 minutes, Zizek takes on the biggest films of the last 100 years – including The Matrix, The Birds, Psycho, The Exorcist, Alien, Mulholland Drive, Solaris, Persona, The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars – and uses them to explore the psychoanalytic and philosophical theories of Freud, Marx, Lacan and Hegel.

Hot stuff! – and the perfect warm-up for the forthcoming sequel, The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology.

  • ‘A highly entertaining and often brilliant tour of modern cinema… Tremendously exhilarating stuff.’ THE GUARDIAN
  • ‘A visually exuberant showcase of Zizek’s infectious enthusiasm around the workings of both the mind and the medium … essential viewing for cinephiles of course, but also for anyone interested in the enduring power of cinema to shape our desires and fuel our dreams.’ TIME OUT
  • ‘A fascinating journey, full of glimpses into psychoanalytical speculation, and a great excuse to revisit many brilliant, mainly familiar pieces of classic cinema.’ LITTLE WHITE LIES
